El Malpais, a volcanic region in New Mexico, gave its name to an eight-track hallucinatory and feverish trip, a worthy heir of Jefferson Airplane and honorable cousin of The Black Angels or Brian Jonestown Massacre. Without actually indulging themselves in shallow revival, Jim Younger’s Spirit assert their original sound and personality. Infused with bluesy and fuzz guitars, tambourines and heavy drums, maracas, organs and strange jew’s harp alongside, the album is upheld by Polar Younger’s incantations.
